Overview
Mount Meru is located just north of the city of Arusha, in the Arusha city and stands at an altitude of 4,566 m. It is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, after Mount Kilimanjaro. The Momella route – which starts at Momella gate, on the eastern side of the mountain – is used to climb Mount Meru. For those climbing Mount Kilimanjaro can view the Mount Meru on a clear day and is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, dependent on definition.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Collected from Arusha hotel, scenic drive through Arusha National Park to Momella gate. Start trek with armed park ranger, spotting giraffes and buffaloes. Reach Maio Falls for a picnic, then continue to the 'fig tree arch' before arriving at Miriakamba Hut for afternoon tea and snacks.

After breakfast, trek from rainforest to heather and moorland vegetation, reaching Saddle Hut by midday. Optional afternoon hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) for views of Arusha National Park and Mt Kilimanjaro. Warm meal at Saddle Hut before early retirement.

Leave camp at night with headlamps, following trail through bush land to Rhino Point. Path becomes challenging with climbing over volcanic ash, rocks, and gravel along the crater rim. Reach Socialist Peak summit for sunrise and views of Mt Meru’s crater. Descend to Saddle Hut for a break, then continue descent to Miriakamba Hut.

After breakfast, follow the shorter 'northern route' back to Momella gate. Chance to see elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and colobus monkeys. Farewell to hiking crew, then transfer back to hotel in Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport.
